Beer for all the right reasons.

Boulcott Street Bistro

Location:
Boulcott Street, Wellington
Review:

This was a real suprise in more ways than one.  Externally it looks like a small, old wooden house (unfortunately dwarfed by the concrete structures which surround it) but once through the front door, it opens up, Tardis like, to present a large dining area (on two floors) and a bar.  The building originally belonged to the Plimmer family, one of the early, influential settler families.

The Bistro describes it self as a winebar/restaurant but has a very respectable range of bottled beer.  At the time of our visit there were beers from NZ (Emerson, Epic, Founders), Australia (Little Creatures, Boags, Cascade and Coopers), then from further afield (Old Speckled Hen, Asahi, Grolsch, Chimay, Pilsner Urquell, Hoegaarden, Verboden Vrucht, Peroni and Singha).  For the less adventurous there was Monteiths and a couple of others.  The barman suggested that as one brand of beer is finished they discuss amongst themselves and customers, which beer(s) they should bring in next - we drank them out of Cascade and Epic !

Opening hours:

Mon - Fri: Midday to late; Sat 3pm to late: Sun and public holidays - CLOSED.
