New Zealand’s Champion Homebrewers Crowned

After two days of judging more than 500 homebrewed beers, SOBA has named New Zealands champion homebrewers for 2017.

Champion Brewer was awarded to Murray McCulloch.

Champion beer was awarded to Steven Bellward for his clone of Panhead’s Black Sabbath.

This year saw a much higher proportion of gold medals (score of 45-50) being awarded, 20 in total. 65 silver medals (score of 38-44) were awarded and 81 bronze (score of 30-37) for a total of 166 medals.
Over 30% of entries scored high enough to medal this year, up from 25% in 2016.

Thanks to Brewaucracy and Hallertau Brewery for providing the major prizes.

A huge, huge thanks to all our amazing judges, stewards and volunteers. And of course a massive thanks to our sponsors Cryer Malt, NZ Hops, Grainfather, Brewshop and Brewers Coop.

And a final thanks to Pacific Flavours in St Johns for letting us take over for the weekend.
